The CODEX¶
The CODEX is the information backbone of Operation LAPIS. In a class using only the practomimetic curriculum it replaces a textbook entirely. In a hybrid implementation it serves as the applied reference track alongside explicit grammar instruction.
Every episode has its own CODEX landing page on the LAPIS site. The CODEX is open and requires no student account to access. Links to the relevant CODEX page are embedded in every immersion prompt.
Tip
Students rarely need to navigate to the CODEX directly. The link in each prompt drops them straight to the episode page they need. The top-level CODEX Links index is mainly useful for you as the Agent.
The Six Sections¶
Each CODEX episode page contains six sections. They are not meant to be read cover-to-cover; they are reference resources activated by the work.
KEY-TEXTs¶
The KEY-TEXTs are Latin-only reading passages that continue or illuminate the story of that episode. Unlike the immersion prompts (which blend English and Latin), the KEY-TEXTs are composed entirely in Latin and are the primary vehicle for building interpretive reading proficiency.
Each KEY-TEXT includes:
- Rollover tooltips: hover (or touch) any Latin word or phrase to see a gloss, parsing note, or commentary. What traditionally lived in a separate notes section is embedded directly in the text.
- Color coding: noun and adjective endings are marked in blue; personal verb endings in red; perfect stems in orange; the imperfect marker ba in purple. Colors were chosen for contrast across the most common forms of color-blindness.
- Visual walkthrough (Missions 1--14): an animated breakdown showing how the grammar unfolds sentence by sentence.
Informational Texts A and B¶
Two non-fiction texts in English that provide the cultural and historical context for the episode. These texts are essential reading for operatives: students who engage with them before composing a character response will produce higher-quality work and develop a richer understanding of the world they are inhabiting. The ATTUNEMENT comprehension questions are built directly from these readings.
GRAMMATICA¶
A reference section covering the grammatical concepts introduced or reinforced in the episode. Like help files in a video game, the GRAMMATICA entries accumulate over the course of the curriculum into a permanent, searchable reference students can return to at any point.
New constructions appear in the GRAMMATICA at the episode where they first become important to the story. Brief direct instruction keyed to the GRAMMATICA is appropriate on Day 1 when a genuinely new concept appears.
VERBA¶
The vocabulary list for the episode. Words in the immersion prompt and KEY-TEXT that are new or worth reinforcing appear here with glosses.
VERBA is the first stop for students who encounter an unfamiliar word in the prompt. If it is not in VERBA, the KEY-TEXT tooltips are the next resource.
CULTURALIA¶
Extended cultural and historical content tied to the setting and events of the episode. CULTURALIA goes beyond the Informational Texts to provide richer context: primary source quotations, material culture, historical background on the people and places the Recentii encounter.
CULTURALIA is not assessed directly. It exists to deepen the students' understanding of the world they are inhabiting and to give them more to work with when composing a character response.
ATTUNEMENT¶
Comprehension questions tied to the KEY-TEXT and the Informational Texts. Completing the ATTUNEMENT questions earns 150 LP per episode and is marked in Mission Control.
Attunement questions are not a quiz; they are scaffolding. They direct students' attention to what matters in the readings and give them a foundation for composing a richer character response.

Every RPG immersion prompt includes a direct link to the corresponding CODEX page; operatives can reach it without navigating the site. Teachers running LAPIS Fabulae should share the relevant CODEX link with students at the start of each new episode, since the branching narrative does not embed these links automatically.
